The Oma Oya Multi-Purpose Project is designed to transfer water, generate hydropower, and support agriculture in the southeastern highlands of Sri Lanka. The project provides 145 cubic meters per minute of water for agriculture, increasing to 700 cubic meters per minute to supply a 120 MW hydropower plant.
The project includes two roller-compacted concrete (RCC) dams. The first dam on the Oma Oya River transfers water to the Deraba Dam reservoir through a 3.9 km transfer tunnel. From there, water is conveyed through an approximately 15.6 km water tunnel and a 595 m vertical shaft to an underground power plant. The discharged water is then conveyed through an approximately 3.3 km tunnel to the Alikota Oya River.

As part of this major infrastructure development, Omran Maroon Engineers Co. was responsible for the excavation of critical tunnel sections using Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) technology. The company successfully completed 3,357 meters of TBM tunnel excavation under highly challenging geological conditions within a 12-month construction period, demonstrating its expertise in mechanized tunneling and underground construction.
The project included a 15 km main tunnel with a 4.3 m diameter access gallery, executed in accordance with international tunneling standards and project specifications to ensure reliable long-term operation of the underground hydraulic system.
