Rogun Dam is located in Tajikistan, near the city of Rogun.
The contract was awarded to Omran Maroon Engineers Co. in January 2014 for the construction of the tunnel and spillway, including the related hydro-mechanical equipment.
This work forms part of the Rogun Dam and Power Plant, which, with a height of 335 m, is the highest dam in the world to date. The scope includes construction of a 1,800 m long tunnel with a total diameter of 17 m, executed using a special excavation method, and also includes a vertical shaft.
In this project, 4,000 tons of steel mesh (V Mesh) and 14,500 meters of rock bolts were installed.
The Rogun Dam Project is one of the world’s largest underground hydropower construction developments. As part of this major infrastructure project, Omran Maroon Engineers Co. was awarded the contract for the construction of the main tunnel, spillway, and associated hydro-mechanical facilities, including the execution of a vertical shaft and underground excavation works.
The project includes the construction of an 1,800 m main tunnel with a diameter of 17 m, a 3,000 m access tunnel with a diameter of 10 m, a 140 × 21 × 14 m vertical shaft, and two underground powerhouse caverns. Construction activities comprised 815,000 m³ of underground excavation, 1,400,000 m³ of rock excavation, 272,000 m³ of concrete placement, 16,800 tons of reinforcement, and 33,000 m³ of shotcrete. The works also included the installation of 4,000 tons of steel mesh (V-Mesh) and 14,500 m of rock bolts to ensure underground stability and long-term structural performance.
Executed by Omran Maroon Engineers Co. as the Contractor, the project was carried out in accordance with the required engineering standards and contractual specifications throughout the 84-month construction period, demonstrating extensive expertise in large-scale underground excavation and hydropower infrastructure construction.
The execution of the Rogun Dam Project engaged multidisciplinary engineering, tunneling, and construction teams throughout the project implementation. The construction of large-diameter tunnels, underground powerhouse caverns, vertical shafts, and spillway structures, together with extensive underground excavation, rock excavation, reinforced concrete works, shotcrete application, rock support installation, and hydro-mechanical construction, required the coordinated efforts of highly skilled engineers, technicians, and specialized underground construction personnel.
As the Contractor, Omran Maroon Engineers Co. managed and coordinated all assigned construction activities, ensuring efficient workforce organization and the successful execution of complex underground infrastructure works in accordance with technical specifications and contractual requirements throughout the 84-month construction period.
