Shiraz–Bushehr–Asalouyeh Railway – Section 5/B

The Shiraz–Bushehr Railway forms a key segment of Iran’s East–West railway transit corridor, providing a strategic connection between the country’s central regions, the southern ports, and the national energy hub at Asalouyeh. The 437 km railway corridor extends through the cities of Shiraz, Kovar, Baygan, Firozabad, Farashband, Bushkan, Kalmeh, Ahram, Bushehr, Zarghan, and Marvdasht, and is divided into 11 construction sections.

The scope of this contract comprises the execution of railway subgrade works for Section 5/B, between Chainage 187+000 and 192+000, covering a total length of 5 km. The project is located northwest of Firozabad and includes the construction of a 3,600 m main horseshoe-shaped tunnel with a 56 m² cross-sectional area, a 3,600 m service tunnel with a 30 m² cross-sectional area, and 1,400 m of side trenches for railway track-bed construction and associated infrastructure.

About This Project

The Shiraz–Bushehr–Asalouyeh Railway – Section 5/B Project forms part of the 437 km Shiraz–Bushehr Railway Corridor, a strategic transportation route connecting Iran’s central regions with the southern ports and the energy hub of Asalouyeh. The contract covers the execution of railway subgrade works for Section 5/B, extending from Chainage 187+000 to 192+000, with a total length of 5 km northwest of Firozabad.

The project includes the construction of major underground railway infrastructure, comprising a 3,600 m horseshoe-shaped main tunnel with a 56 m² cross-sectional area, a 3,600 m service tunnel with a 30 m² cross-sectional area, and 1,400 m of side trenches for railway track-bed construction and associated infrastructure. The execution of these works required advanced tunneling techniques and specialized ground support systems to ensure structural stability and long-term operational performance.

Construction activities included 80,000 m³ of excavation, 310,000 m³ of tunnel excavation, 57,000 m³ of reinforced concrete, 164,000 m² of formwork, 3,100 tons of structural steel works, 122,000 m of rock bolts, 19,600 m³ of shotcrete, and 122,000 m² each of geotextile and geomembrane installation. Executed by Omran Maroon Engineers Co. as the Contractor, the project was carried out in accordance with railway engineering standards, technical specifications, and contractual requirements throughout the 30-month construction period, delivering critical underground infrastructure for one of Iran’s most important railway development projects.

Employment

The execution of the Shiraz–Bushehr–Asalouyeh Railway – Section 5/B Project engaged multidisciplinary engineering, technical, and construction teams throughout the project implementation. The construction of railway tunnels, service tunnels, railway subgrade works, and associated infrastructure required the coordinated efforts of specialists in tunneling, railway engineering, geotechnical engineering, reinforced concrete construction, ground support systems, and underground infrastructure.

The project’s technically demanding scope, including the excavation of main and service tunnels, installation of rock bolts, shotcrete, structural steel supports, geotextile, and geomembrane systems, together with railway earthworks and concrete construction, required efficient workforce planning, continuous technical supervision, and close coordination among engineering and construction teams to ensure construction quality, operational safety, and compliance with railway engineering standards throughout all phases of execution.

As the Contractor, Omran Maroon Engineers Co. managed and coordinated all construction activities, ensuring effective workforce organization and the successful delivery of the project in full compliance with technical specifications, contractual requirements, and project objectives throughout the 30-month construction period.
